Jubilee Park gets a restored Edgar Wood staircase and a Green Flag

July was a busy month for Jubilee Park. First, the restoration of Edgar Wood’s Jubilee Park Staircase and Fountain was finally completed.

The project had to abandon restoring the fountain early on because of the cost – but perhaps this could become a bid to the Heritage Lottery at a later date. Nevertheless, the cleaning and stabilising of the structure has made a huge improvement. Full marks to Jubb & Jubb conservation surveyors of Ribchester.

In 1905, Edgar Wood waited six months during construction to obtain exactly the right marble-like stone and now, at last, we can see what the wait was for!

The Council and Friends of Jubilee Park have also been active undertaking repairs, creating beds and tidying up after vandals. The result is that the park has received a Green Flag Award. So congratulations to everyone!

July 11th marked the 90th anniversary of the Middleton Flood remembered in the Jubilee Park monument. The Friends have produced an excellent post complete with historical photographs.
