A pop-up museum based at the Grade II* listed Alkrington Hall in Manchester which housed the 18th century Leverian collection. In November 2016, 250 years since Ashton Lever first showed his own collection, Edgeways Productions are opening Alkrington Hall East to the public.
This time, instead of stuffed birds and elephants feet (luckily) we’re hosting collections sourced from the local community. From WWI to Y-Fronts via music, memories and matchboxes, A CARGO OF CURIOSITIES examines the notion of collection, and the impulse to collect, through the lens of the original eighteenth century museum.
The project is supported by local interest groups, Arts Council England, Middleton Township, the University of Manchester Centre for Museology and Chetham’s Library with their patron Jeremy Deller.
Open FREE to the public Friday to Sunday from November 10th – 28th (1pm – 4pm). Alkrington Hall East, Hall Drive, Middleton, Manchester M24 1WD
Private viewings outside these times can be booked by calling 07746 451351.
Visitors are encouraged to bring with them a small item, which they are willing to donate to the museum, as an exhibit. No Parking outside the Hall, disabled only. Free parking is available on neighbouring streets
