Civic Association

The Coat of Arms of the former Borough of Middleton

Middleton Civic Association meets monthly and has an events programme each year. Click on our posts below.

The Association was formed in 1974, following the re-organisation of local government and the amalgamation of the Borough of Middleton into the new Rochdale Metropolitan Borough. Our primary function is to protect the identity and heritage of the town.

The Association fought to establish Middleton Town Centre Conservation Area and its extension in 2009. In recent years it helped write the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan. It has published two volumes of articles on the history of Middleton called Middleton Matters and Middleton Matters 2.

The Association is also responsible for the Blue Plaques marking Middleton’s famous buildings, events and people.  The plaques are quite diverse, one commemorates the Middleton Flood of 1927, another the meeting point of the Middleton contingent to the Peterloo massacre while another describes the area where the old Middleton Hall once stood.
